OUR HISTORY

The North Texas Area United Way has been the heart and soul of charitable and benevolent giving in Wichita Falls, Texas throughout its 100-year history.

In January, 1922, the Municipal Board of Charity was formed with the right and authority to conduct one united campaign for local charities each year. In 1927, it was decided the name of the organization would be better recognized as the “Community Chest Fund.” The Community Chest met in 1955 and transitioned once again to the “Greater United Fund of Wichita Falls.” Nineteen years later, the board of directors approved another change to “United Way of Greater Wichita Falls.” One last name change in 1999 to “North Texas Area United Way” reflects the progress of the organization in expanding its programs to outlying North Texas areas.

Over the history of the organization, we’ve always focused on solving community problems, but what’s changed is how we do it.

The North Texas Area United Way has transitioned most recently to the United Way Worldwide Community Impact model. No longer a pass-through organization that passes donor dollars from one hand to the next, NTAUW focuses on three key areas that provide a better life for all: Education, Income and Health, and invest in programs and services to benefit all in our community.

With our focus on these key areas, North Texas Area United Way is making a difference in the lives of Wichita County and area residents through programs in early childhood education that assure our parents and children are interacting through books and daily activities; that our children are prepared for school when they enter Kindergarten; that our third graders are reading at grade level; that our youth are prepared to graduate high school and will be career or college ready; that our families are financially secure through our income programs; and that our older adults are receiving nutritious meals and are living healthy, independent lives.

We’re on a mission to change lives in North Texas.

Yes, it’s an incredibly big statement. But, its one that we are making a reality. We’re tackling tough issues that make a lasting difference and create opportunities for greatness.

We believe in people and possibilities.

We believe that everyone — regardless of where they started or ended up — should have the opportunity to be great. Sometimes the only thing someone needs in order to turn things around is opportunity. We fund some of the most effective local programs that work together to create change that lasts. We invest in solutions, but more than that, we invest in the opportunities those solutions provide and the people those solutions empower.

North Texas Area United Way has invested in the most effective local programs that work to create a better picture for our community and change lives forever. We unite donors and volunteers with organizations who are focused on producing real results in the areas of education, financial stability, and health.

North Texas Area United Way provides services to the following counties: Archer, Baylor ,Clay, Jack,  Foard, Montague,  Wilbarger, Wichita,  Wise, Hardeman & Throckmorton
