Our History
The North Texas Area United Way has been the heart and soul of charitable and benevolent giving in Wichita Falls, Texas since 1922. In January of that year, the Municipal Board of Charity was formed with the right and authority to conduct one united campaign for local charities each year. In 1927, it was decided the name of the organization would be better recognized as the “Community Chest Fund.” We experienced a number of name changes until our final iteration in 1999 to the North Texas Area United Way.
Even though our name has changed a time or two, we have always focused on helping those in need within our community. So, how do we do that today? We utilize the United Way Worldwide Community Impact model. NTAUW focuses on three key areas that provide a better life for all: education, income, and health. We invest in programs and services to benefit all in our community.
By focusing on these key areas we are better able to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those who we serve. We are making a difference in the lives of Wichita County and area residents through programs in early childhood education that assure our parents and children are interacting through books and daily activities and are prepared for school when they enter Kindergarten; that our third graders are reading at grade level; that our youth are prepared to graduate high school and will be career or college ready; that our families are financially secure through our income programs; and that our older adults are receiving nutritious meals and are living healthy, independent lives.
We’re on a mission to change lives in North Texas.
Yes, it’s an incredibly big statement. But, it's one that we are making a reality. We’re tackling tough issues that make a lasting difference and create opportunities for greatness.
We believe in people and possibilities.
We believe that everyone, regardless of where they started or ended up, should have the opportunity to be great. Sometimes the only thing someone needs in order to turn things around is opportunity. We fund effective local programs that create change that lasts. We invest in solutions, but more than that, we invest in the opportunities those solutions provide and the people those solutions empower. We unite donors and volunteers with organizations that are focused on producing real results.
